About this event

Join The Seaweed Institute to learn the craft of seaweed pressing - a Victorian practice that captures the underwater beauty of seaweeds. Be part of creating a herbarium of local seaweed species from around the Lizard.

During the workshop you will learn to recognise and identify local seaweed species. The cultural history of seaweeds will be discussed, as well it’s agricultural, scientific and ecological uses. You will learn how to forage, store and use this abundant resource.

After laying out your designs they will be loaded into The Seaweed Institutes seaweed press where they will dry over the next weeks. You will be able to collect the pieces from CAST at a later date.

Duration: 2-3 hours

Age: Adults and accompanied children

Food: Seaweed snacks provided, CAST Cafe will also be open

Access: The room in CAST used for this workshop is accessed via a staircase

Capacity: 20 people. Ticket priority will be given to residents of postcodes TR12 and TR13. This project was awarded funding to focus on this area.

Next event: Seaweed Pressing Workshop. 2nd of December Coverack Lambeage Hall. 2-5pm

The Seaweed Institute has been awarded funding through the National Lottery Community Fund to run a project; Seaweeds of the Lizard. This workshop at CAST will be the first in a series of free workshops that are designed to connect community and seaweed.

Pressings created during the workshops will be used to create a collective Seaweeds of the Lizard publication. Before returning the original pieces to you, they will be digitised and used in this herbarium.
